In January 2019, the cost of cooking one standard Imeretian khachapuri decreased comparatively both annual and monthly, ranging between 3.56 GEL (Tbilisi) and 3.70 GEL (Kutaisi), with an average cost of 3.62 GEL. The new average price is 2.5% lower than in January 2018. As for the month-to-month development, the price of khachapuri is 3.5% lower compared to the previous month (December 2018).
The main ingredient in khachapuri is Imeretian cheese, and naturally, its price is the main driver behind fluctuations, and thus has recently pushed prices down. However, in January 2019, the price of flour increased by 1.1% month-on-month (compared to December 2018), and by 7.1% year-on-year (compared to January 2018). It is important to note that we only observe the price of high-quality wheat flour within four Georgian cities.

The average cost of cooking one standard Imeretian khachapuri in the first month of this year is 3.62 GEL, which is 3.2% lower – m onth-on-month (compared to the previous month), and 2.5% lower year-on-year (from January 2018).
In January 2019, the Kh-Index data can reveal that Batumi is leading in terms of price, where the cost of cooking an Imeretian khachapuri stands at 3.70 GEL. Telavi takes the second place at 3.61 GEL. While, Tbilisi and Kutaisi follow closely with 3.56 GEL and 3.60 GEL, respectively. The price variation between the most expensive city (Batumi) and the cheapest (Tbilisi) is only 0.14 GEL- hardly a significant difference.

The cost of cooking one standard Imeretian khachapuri in November 2018 averaged at 3.62 GEL, which is around 0.8% higher compared to October 2018 (month-on-month), and 2.2% lower in comparison to the previous year (November 2017).
The recent increase in Georgian bread prices was one of the most hotly debated topics within the country. Several ministers even commented on this rather significant price surge. Experts relate this rise to a lower harvest from exporter countries.
According to Indexmundi, starting from March 2018, international wheat prices were characterized by an increasing trend. However, international wheat prices started declining from September 2018. According to the USDA office of Global Analysis report, over the last three months the US and Canadian prices are up, with strong international demand, while Black Sea prices have declined slightly.
