On October 23, 2013 ISET hosted a strategic dialogue on Georgia’s national competitiveness. Eric Livny, ISET’s Director, opened the dialog with a brief presentation of the major changes in Georgia’s competitiveness performance in the 2012/13 Global Competitiveness Report. Georgia improved from 77th to 72nd position; the country saw the largest improvement in the macroeconomic environment, while doing slightly worse in the labor market, healthcare and primary education pillars.
In the second part of the event, Mr. Livny invited a panel of experts to discuss the potential focus of next year’s National Competitiveness Report (NCR).
On October 11, 2013, ISET was pleased to host Swiss Ambassador to Georgia H.E. Günther Bächler. In introducing his presentation the ambassador outlined his interesting career track, which started with a BA in Art and History of Art and then moved to conflict studies and diplomacy.
The presentation continued with a discussion of the early development of Switzerland, particularly how the country, which was considered among the poorest some 200 years ago, transformed in one of the leading countries, strong and stable both economically and politically. He then drew some parallels between the early history of Switzerland and the current situation in Georgia.
Professor Einar Hope from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) is a leading Nordic authority on energy market design and regulation. In 1995-1999, he took a break from academic activities and served as director of the Norwegian Competition Authority.
This year’s visit to Georgia (and ISET) was the second one for Professor Hope in as many years. In addition to advising ISET students, Professor Hope used his ten-day stay in Tbilisi in order to deliver a public seminar “THE POTENTIAL OF GEORGIA’S ELECTRICITY SECTOR IN AN INTEGRATED REGIONAL POWER MARKET”.
