ISET-PI Conducts Trainings for the Business Association of Georgia

In the frames of the memorandum of understanding between ISET Policy Institute and Business Association of Georgia (BAG), ISET-PI offered a compressed four-day training to the staff of the association. Senior research fellows of the policy institute, Maya Grigolia and Nino Doghonadze conducted the training in the macroeconomics 101. The topics of the training included: GDP, unemployment, inflation, economic growth, investment, monetary and fiscal policy, international trade and exchange rates, etc.
The training took place at BAG office and 8 staff members participated. The process was very dynamic, interactive and interesting, enriched by the vast experience of the BAG staff.
EBRD's Helena Schweiger: The Impact of Armed Conflict

On Thursday, May 14th, ISET hosted Helena Schweiger, Senior Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist at the EBRD, London. Ms. Schweiger presented her recent paper “The impact of armed conflict on firms’ performance and perceptions”, co-authored with Carly Petracco. This study explores the short-run impact of August 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia on firms’ performance and their perceptions of the business environment.
Authors used the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance (BEEP) Survey data before and nine months after this armed conflict. The difference-in-differences estimates suggest that despite the short duration, armed conflict had a significant and negative impact on share of exports in sales and employment for at least a subset of firms.
