ISET

ISET is proud to congratulate Salome Baslandze, an ISET graduate of 2011, on her recent appointment as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance (EIEF) in Rome.
After graduation from ISET, she received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, and this year was one of the winners of Economics Day 2016 at PSU which helped towards her appointment at the Einaudi Institute. She is now continuing her research on growth, technological change, firm dynamics, and the dynamics of innovation in Rome.
Salome was able to secure this exciting new position through the Economics Job Market, a non-profit organisation. The hiring process was extremely competitive and required several stages of review and a number of interviews. She first interviewed for the job while attending a meeting of the American Economic Association (AEA) in Boston, Massachusetts this year, and later had the opportunity to visit the EIEF to meet the staff there and give a sample lecture.

On 25 May, 2016 ISET faculty member and head of the Macroeconomic Policy Research Center at ISET's Policy Institute, Dr. Yaroslava Babych, was an invited panel speaker at the conference on Industrial Policy for the Development of Georgia, organized by the Centre for Social Studies of Georgia.
The first half of the conference was devoted to presentations and panel discussions on Georgia’s recent key economic trends, where Dr. Babych presented Georgia’s Trends in Economic Growth based on research conducted by ISET-PI. The main message of the presentation was that the Georgian economy showed remarkable resilience to the outside shocks of 2015. However, the more challenging and long-term issue is the deficiencies in education, which continue to lead to a high rate of self-employment in low-skilled agricultural subsistence farming.
